This sounds like permanently corrupted sectors on the hard drive. Second guess, defective ram. I'm guessing Seth already made the same diagnosis. Replacing either of these isn't too difficult. I can take a look at it at game.
It's very old, and has all sorts of problems - replacing anything isn't worth it. The plan is to limp along till Xmas and check out Eee PCs and their ilk.
