Woke up at 7 this morning to a fairly loud, but not damaging, rat fight. Proceeded to break the cardinal rule of animal fights: no matter how sweet and domesticated the critter is, don't stick your hand in there. As a result, I have the most serious rat bite I've ever had - about a 1/4 inch gash on the backside of my thumb, near the base. It's not in a place that really interferes with typing or drawing, has stopped bleeding, and while deep, isn't actually bad. Should leave a fun scar, though. Plus, I got a couple minutes of mini-shock: dizzy, queasy, the whole nine yards. So that was exciting.

That plus the residual effects of the melatonin I took mean I'm kinda bleary today. Fortunately, my calculations say I can take a day off and still make monthly quota easily, since I've been writing mostly tech articles of late. These pay considerably better than my usual. So today will be a day of dishes and housework and working on my unpaid drawing obligations. Also, continuing wardrobe work.

It is extremely novel, decadent almost, to have enough short-sleeved shirts that fit nicely. This, of course, underlines my lack of summerweight skirts, which I am slowly working to remedy, but probably won't get fixed before the end of the hot weather. Not that I would mind the end of the hot weather. If the light has to be failing already, I could at least not sweat/run up the power bill. Also converting some of the older cotton/linen skirts that have gone see-through into French knickers. I anticipate a lot of sewing this fall. I have even broken out the machine for it.

Oddly, I have no problem making food in an assembly line fashion, as long as I don't think about eating it. Thus, I have a large pot of homemade soup and about a half gallon of homemade almond milk on hand. This is supporting my heavily cereal, soup and sandwich-based diet. The me that makes exciting curries and stir-fries every night is off somewhere, as is the me who has any interest in baking. Though some of that latter is the weather; even frying an egg is awful, and I made the soup in the rice cooker to reduce room heating. I have discovered paprika, so that's improving things. For years I didn't know why anyone ate it; the stuff you get from the grocery store is red and tastes like nothing. Hungarian half-sharp paprika from the spice house is a different beast entirely.

Alternating between window shopping apartments heavily (I shan't be moving till next year, regardless) and thinking about what moving is actually like with a shudder and the desire to stay here forever. Light is going to be poor in the winter, but I do love my little greenery-filled sidewalk. That will be hard to duplicate.

Anyway, off to do Things. Art post tomorrow.
