One of the benefits of my new apartment is that it's on the third floor and has west-facing windows. This means that it gets really warm in the afternoons, but it also means that I have suddenly gone from relatively thin, filtered sunlight to enough light to grow plants. I have not historically been much of a gardener, being distractable and fairly flaky, but green things are nifty and good for me. Because I also have an aversion to plants that don't do anything but look decorative, I have acquired herbs.

First came the basil, which has grown to monstrous proportions. Then came the tomatoes, which are honestly rather dubious and may not produce anything. Then there was cilantro, and later I found myself picking long stems of the feral mint that grows beside my old apartment for rooting. The plants continue to demand more room to grow and I now have two small empty pots that clearly need greenery.

Tomorrow I may buy fresh herbs at the grocery store to stick in water for rooting. The apartment is high enough up that I even have some hopes of keeping a few things alive come winter. Though I am currently sticking with extremely enthusiastic members of the mint family, I find myself wondering if I can hang a few plants higher up to take advantage of the tall windows.

They will find me under a carpet of greenery.
