On the fourth day of Hogswatch, your Seanan gave away…

Posted by Seanan McGuire

…a copy of Overgrowth, by Mira Grant!

Hello, readers, writers, and terrifying couch gremlins, and welcome to the Thirteen Days of Hogswatch, the game where the points are made up but the rules really do matter.  This is our fourth giveaway for 2025! I hope you’re all excited!  Here are a few things you should know:

1. Every post will have its own prize, and its own rules.  This is to filter out people linked here from the “hey, free stuff!” blogs, who are less interested in our prizes than they are in the fact that they don’t cost anything.
2. There will be one redistribution draw for unclaimed prizes. Any remaining after that will be returned to my office to think about what they did. If you fail to claim a prize, you cannot win another.
3. I cannot afford international postage.  If you are outside the US/Canada, you must state so in your entry.  Someone else has volunteered to cover these costs, but I still need to know.
4. All posts automatically mirror to Dreamwidth.  For RNG reasons, comments left on Dreamwidth do not count as entries; you must enter via the root post on my blog (seananmcguire.com/blog) if you want to be eligible to win.
5. If you haven’t commented here before, your first comment will go into moderation, and be approved as soon as I see it. So if your comment does not appear, please don’t comment again. It still won’t work, until I manually approve you. I promise to approve before prizes are drawn.

So here.  We.  GO!

Our fourth prize this year is a copy of Overgrowth, released under the name Mira Grant. It will be signed, unless you tell me you don’t want it to be. To enter…

1. Comment on this post.
2. What is your favorite fictional plant? Mushrooms are not plants. Entries naming fungus will not be counted.
3. If you are outside the US/Canada, tell me so.

All winners will be selected at 12PT on December 15th.  So now, as the sages say…

…GAME ON!

Our first prize this year is a repeat from the last three years: a set of dice that I will select from my cauldrons of random dice.  It will come with a dice bag.  It will definitely not match.  It will also come with a signed bookplate, so you can identify where the dice came from.

1. Comment on this post.
2. Tell me your favorite color, and also what color you absolutely do not want me to include in your bag.
3. If you are outside the US/Canada, tell me so.

All winners will be selected at 12PT on December 15th.  So now, as the sages say…

…GAME ON!

Into The Wilderness

Posted by James Gurney

Gideon and Bandy head into the wilderness, from Dinotopia: First Flight.

  • What inspired this painting were stories of wilding, where animals (esp. condors, wolves, gorillas, and elephants) who were raised in captivity came outside and faced wild Nature for the first time — or humans who lived their entire lives in the city, and then found themselves under the stars.
  • Apparently it’s a powerful sensory and psychological experience.
  • Astronauts returning to Earth after a long time in space have said that the effect of a simple bird song is so emotional that it's almost unbearable.

Look! I remembered to post before December started this year!

Hello, friends! It's about to be December again, and you know what that means: the fact I am posting this actually before December 1 means [staff profile] karzilla reminded me about the existence of linear time again. Wait, no -- well, yes, but also -- okay, look, let me back up and start again: it's almost December, and that means it's time for our annual December holiday points bonus.

The standard explanation: For the entire month of December, all orders made in the Shop of points and paid time, either for you or as a gift for a friend, will have 10% of your completed cart total sent to you in points when you finish the transaction. For instance, if you buy an order of 12 months of paid time for $35 (350 points), you'll get 35 points when the order is complete, to use on a future purchase.

The fine print and much more behind this cut! )

Thank you, in short, for being the best possible users any social media site could possibly ever hope for. I'm probably in danger of crossing the Sappiness Line if I haven't already, but you all make everything worth it.

On behalf of Mark, Jen, Robby, and our team of awesome volunteers, and to each and every one of you, whether you've been with us on this wild ride since the beginning or just signed up last week, I'm wishing you all a very happy set of end-of-year holidays, whichever ones you celebrate, and hoping for all of you that your 2026 is full of kindness, determination, empathy, and a hell of a lot more luck than we've all had lately. Let's go.

Hogswatch prep.

Posted by Seanan McGuire

So it’s almost time for Hogswatch again! And by community request, we’re doing things a little differently this year. So:

From December 1st through December 13th, I will post giveaways. Please only enter if you intend to claim a prize if you win. On December 15th, I will select winners, and post them here. You will not be contacted directly if you win: you must return to this blog and see your name.

Winners who do not follow all the rules of a specific day will not be eligible to receive their prizes; I will draw another name, and they will never know they could have won. The rules are generally something like “comment directly on the post, tell me your favorite poem, tell me whether you’re in the US or not.” The first enters you, the second tells me you’re not a bot, the third determines postage estimates.

All winners will have until December 20th to claim their prizes; any unclaimed prizes will have new winners drawn on December 21st. They will probably not be mailed out before Christmas. There will not be a third drawing; the second is an experiment to see if it cuts down on unclaimed prizes.

And that is all.
